First Annual Celina Garden Club Tour
The Austin Garden
4016 Preston Lakes Circle, Celina, TX
Soft contours lull you on the walk down the gently curving driveway of Gil and Donna Austin. The rambling house sits amidst a profusion of plantings, and in the spring it is a riot of color. The fall holds a promise of what is to come. Mounds of wildflowers dot the front yard and a dry stream bed abounds with Cannas, Ruellia, Daylilies, and Bachelor Buttons. A hedge of Nearly Wild Roses leads you to the front of the house where Hyacinth Bean vines accent the curved sidewalk. Rosemary, Summer Poinsettia, and Gomphrena battle for position while Wood Ferns find a shady spot beneath a Japanese Maple. From porch rockers one sees Donna's peach trees and three apple trees planted for Molly, their donkey. Another dry stream area sits amid ornamental grasses, Esperanza, and Nana Coreopsis. The side of the house hides Althea and Camellias with a Hydrangea looking for the spotlight. The back of the Austin stone home nurtures a transplanted rose from their Lake Texoma farm. The fire pit, with 3 water flumes into the pool, is ringed by another Japanese Maple, Oxalis, Hostas, Azaleas and "one HOT, HOT pepper plant", according to Donna. Back porch rockers overlook Lantana, Pinks, and Burr Oaks. Beyond the fence one sees 20 head of cattle, Molly the donkey, 2 ponds, Gil's "Man Barn" with a vegetable garden and cooking corral and accommodations for 84 Purple Martin families. |
